SUMMARY
January Program Summary:
Equalizing Leadership: A Conservation with
Marie C. Wilson
Sadhvi Subramanian welcomed all the luncheon attendees and introduced
renowned leading feminist and social challenger, Marie Wilson.
Marie Wilson is the Founder of the White House project, Foundation
for Women, and Take Our Daughters to Work Day. She addressed the
audience on the duty of women to lead and the power of diverse
and equal leadership in politics and business today.
With regards to the roles of women in today’s workplace,
it is important to have a diverse group of women. Women are typically
known as the trend spotters, not the trend setters, in the workplace.
And women often do or help others do the right thing in the workplace.
According to some new research in the field of science, there
are some studies showing the genetic links in compatibility between
male and female brains. Marie quipped, “Show me a woman
without guilt, and I’ll show you a man!” The audience
emphatically agreed with laughter and applause. But, the fact
is h regards to moving forward in the workplace. Historically
men don’t really have guilt issues, hence their ability
to continue moving forward on a proje centers in our brains that
prompt us to evaluate issues and/or solutions longer than men.
This is not necessarily a bad or good there was some backlash
by the media about women in the workplace, after that the media
referred to it as the “Opt-Out Revolution” in which
were women going home to be full time mothers. Now the term is
comically referred to as the “Last Conspiracy” in
reference to what it means to be a good mother in this day and
age. So, the question remains, how do we, as successful women,
create opportunity for ourselves? Start by recognizing the skills
that you possess and you genuinely enjoy using - That way you
can look to the future and actually see yourself enjoying it whether
it be in or out of the workplace.
Marie made a personal plea to the audience to one: make a commitment
to inspire other people and, two: run for office!
9 out of 10 candidates running for legislative office are men,
because women don't step up to those roles like they should. You
want to affect change? Run for office! How do you start in politics?
Volunteer with a campaign. Decide what and where your issues are.
Go see your local politicians speak and sponsor women in positive
ways.
She also asked that the audience think of 5 people in our lives
who encourage us and tell us the real and sometimes harsh truth.

EVENT SUMMARIES
Past President's Dinner
mos Club, famous for its old fashioned warmth and long
list of luminaries encompassing tellectual distinction, proved to
be a fitting venue for this year’s dinner honoring the Paseption,
followed by a sit-down dinner, refreshed quite a few cherished memong
with good friends brought together 16 of the women bound by the
common l and strength as present and past CREW DC Presidents.
This biannual evhed DC Chapter tradition. We hope that this year’s
gathering carried the simple ‘thank you’ gesture from
our CREW DC community and allowed professional interaction to
take place in a well deserved detour from the intensity of the
daily routine. The pictures capturing the character of this evening
speak for themselves.
On behalf of all our fellow CREW members I would like to extend
special thanks to Betsy Karmin for facilitating the venue, to
the leadership of the Member Services Committee, and Danna Buchanon
in particular, and to our own Ruth Jansson, Cosmos Club member
and a good friend to our distinguished guests, for graciously
helping to get this event to a great start.

Wine-Arounds
Tuesday, June 7th, CREW National Capital Committee hosted the
annual Wine Around event. Ruth Jansson hosted at her home in Chevy
Chase, DC while Jennifer Bognet catered to the Northern Virginia
crowd at her home in Vienna, VA. Many thanks to both of these
long-time, dedicated CREW members for being gracious and fun hostesses.
The evening proved to be warm and sunny – just right for
a networking event hosted in backyards. With fabulous heavy hors
d’oeuvres and wine to comment on, starting a conversation
with a fellow CREW member was easy. Both locations welcomed a
great number of women from differing industry backgrounds and
various levels of experience. Discussions ranged from Federal
budget cuts, to multi-family housing booms, to accolades for specific
members’ promotions and new jobs. Networking, catching up
with old colleagues, and enjoying the benefits of being a CREW
member were the highlights of the evening.
10+/20+ Dinner
The CREW DC Member Services/Networking Committee sponsored the
annual 10+/20+ Dinner on March 29, 2011 at the historic Cosmos
Club located on Embassy Row, in Washington, DC. The Cosmos Club
is housed in one of Washington’s elegant early 19th century
residences, the Townsend Mansion. The dinner honors CREW DC members
who have been active in CREW for ten or more years or have been
involved in the real estate profession for twenty or more years.
The event was attended by over 40 members, including twelve past
CREW DC presidents. The evening provided an opportunity for the
attendees to reconnect, network and celebrate the accomplishments
of our CREW chapter over the past 32 years. Highlights included
a discussion of interesting facts about each attendee, which included
several announcements of promotions, recent marriages and exciting
new pursuits.
New Member Breakfast
The New Member Breakfast was held on Thursday, March 31st in
the Arent Fox board room at 1050 Connecticut Avenue NW. Many thanks
to Arent Fox and NRAI for sponsoring this breakfast. The goal
of the New Member Breakfast is to educate new members on the ways
to get involved in this organization and network with other members.
It was a great success with 40 attendees. The event kicked off
by Bethany Allen, our CRE and explained the benefits of CREW membership.
Following Bethany, ir committee's mission and activities. To conclude
the event, Jill Homan, our CREW DC Trea will be held at the Washington
Harbor in September and encouraged the new members to get
The Mansion on O Tour
The Member Services and Networking Committee hosted an event
on February 28th at the Mansion on O located in the heart of DuPont
Circle. The Mansion is composed of five interconnected town houses
consisting of more than 100 rooms (and 32 secret doors) Designed
in 1892 by Edward Clark, architect of the US Cily and extended
family home till 1919. The fine craftsmanship is believed to be
the last, virtually intact, private residence of that period in
Washington DC. Twenty-two CREW members attended this lovely evening.
Several new members, long time members as well as sponsors attended.
All members enjoyed the architecture, wandering around the space
and its many rooms and levels viewing a variety of period styles,
hand painted ceilings, original Tiffany stained glass window and
a two story Log Cabin . Displayed are many different artist works
as well as accessories. The members enjoyed a very elaborate dinner
and dessert buffet in a reserved area for CREW in a dining room
that was set up beautifully. A wonderful Networking event and
time was had by all.
