Retail real estate investment, development, and leasing strategies are evolving rapidly in response to the current unstable retail market. At this event, representatives from the leasing, development and local retailer community came together to discuss the current state of the retail market and what they believe leasing trends will be going forward.
First, the panelists noted the shift in the relationships between retailers and developers. To be successful, Jessica Bruner suggested, these parties must learn to work together, not as adversaries, to make a store or restaurant successful. They also touched upon the increasing importance of location to a retailer; they want to go into locations where they know they will be adjacent to complementary properties. For developers, the focus will be increasingly on repositioning existing properties. For example, Federal Realty Investment’s Bethesda Row has experienced a number of successful iterations. Instead of pursuing new opportunities, developers are concentrating on tweaking their existing properties to improve the retail mix to maximize profits.

CREW Round Table-The State of the Job Market
April 27, 2010
April’s Round Table “The State of the Job Market”
was an informative discussion. The group consisted of 40 attendees
at the Chevy Chase Bank in Bethesda on April 27, 2010.
Betsy Karmin, a partner with DLA Piper moderated the panel which
consisted of: Wendy Goetz, Director at Cushman and Wakefield, Elisha
King, Partner DLA Piper, Marsha Pearcy, Managing Director, Equinox
Search and Kimball Wood, Senior Director, Crown Advisors.
The participants conveyed upbeat and optimistic messages.
Moderator, Betsy Karmin, started the program by having each of
the panelists tell the audience an interesting fact about themselves.
Marsha Pearcy told a story about interviewing a candidate for 15
minutes before realizing she was talking to the wrong person/a total
stranger!
Marsha also says that she is “cautiously optimistic”
for employment and that “where there is capital, there is
hiring.” One trend seems to be people switching from real
estate to jobs in solar and wind energy.
Kimball Wood noted that she agrees and is seeing hiring in the
world of asset management, property management and acquisitions.
The concept being that if a company owns property, the property
still must be managed. Kimball advised the group to keep a good/positive
attitude if searching for employment.
Wendy Goetz has been with Cushman and Wakefield for 25 years and
taken 3 vacations in the timeshares of her colleagues just by hanging
out at the water cooler! Wendy mentioned that Cushman’s hiring
has increased around 70% from 2009 and that she uses Craigslist
on occasion to find the right hire. Wendy had some good tips for
resumes as well: less is more, keep it straight forward and factual,
and no long narrative at the beginning.
Panelist Elisha King (who has been called DC’s Top Young
Gun Attorney) was just back from running a half marathon the previous
weekend. She deals with employment contracts and says that she is
seeing more unusual requests these days. Employees are asking for
more vacation time and telecommuting options. One audience member
asked “how to you negotiate a raise in this economy?”
Ms. King recommends setting a goal with your employer that will
be rewarded.

CNCC Op Ed Project Seminar
On February 21, 2010, CREW National Capital Committee
hosted The Op Ed Project for a targeted seminar to CREW members.
The Op Ed Project is a New York City-based group that works to empower
and engage women in the editorial community.
However, the name may be a misnomer. Most of the participants thought
they would polish their writing and communication skills and leave
with a draft editorial piece. Instead, they were encouraged not
to write, but to think of the bigger picture in which they lived
and worked and engage themselves in the debate and contribute their
opinions to the greater dialogue. A majority of the time was spent
on identifying skill sets and expertise, in both the narrowest sense
of the term and the broadest sense of the term. Only after this
“a-ha” moment, the moment when the women uncovered the
breadth of what they can contribute, did the seminar review the
mechanics of drafting an op-ed piece.
The seminar was limited to 22 CREW members so that
everyone could speak freely and participate as they wished. The
facilitator, Katie Orenstein, is a published author and frequent
contributor to Op Ed pages across the country and has engaged a
network of alumni and journalists to help train the next generation
of women thought leaders.
The Project’s goal is to increase the number of women that
contribute their opinions to the mainstream media in a thoughtful
and meaningful way, whether through the op-ed pages or elsewhere.
At CNCC, we want our members – who are already experts and
leaders in the industry – to gain more ground and have their
thoughts reflected in papers, on panels and throughout the real
estate community. The Op Ed Project is one more tool to provide
members in achieving success in commercial real estate and we look
forward to making it available to more members. If you are interested
in more information, see www.theopedproject.org; they will be hosting
a May 1 seminar in DC, if you are interested in attended, a CNCC
discount is available (contact Erica Leatham, CREW Maryland, for
details; eleatham@meyerseisler.cm or 240-283-1163).
New Member Breakfast
On February 25, CREW DC held its annual breakfast
to welcome new members. The breakfast was organized by the
Networking and Member Services Committees. About 20 people
attended the event sponsored by Arent Fox. Kathryn Ciliberti,
CREW DC President, greeted members, including board members and
committee chairs, who had gathered for the occasion, reminding all
of the benefits of CREW. Kathy Allgier, the keynote speaker
and a former CREW DC President, spoke about her involvement in CREW
on a national level, how she got involved in CREW DC over 25 years
ago and left members with a clear message "you get out of CREW
what you put in." New members networked with existing members
following the breakfast.

CREW Presidents Dinner 2010
January’s Presidents dinner was a true success.
About 20 CREW Past Presidents attended the event at Kinkead’s
on January 12, 2010. The current President, Kathryn Ciliberti, was
in attendance as was the President Elect, Bethany Allen. Past president
Jeane LaBelle commented it was a wonderful event, “so many
familiar faces!” The group dined on Grilled Squid with Creamy
Polenta, Tomato Fondu and Pesto for a starter paired with Prosecco.
The second course was Brioche Crusted Rockfish with Artichoke Puree,
Oven Dried Tomatoes, Spinach and Lemon. This dish was paired with
a choice of a French white burgundy or a red from Tuscany. The past
presidents enjoyed catching up on the latest business news and sharing
personal accomplishments. Credit is due to the Networking Committee,
Caki Diehl, and Soha Mody for arranging the lovely event.
