Universities are often large landholders and, in recent years,
they have begun to recognize the value of their real estate -
not just as sites for new facilities, but also as important funding
sources. Real estate is not the primary function of a university,
however, so school administrators have turned to private companies
to serve as development partners. CREW DC invited representatives
from three local universities, along with their development partners,
to discuss their recent experiences working together on capital
improvements projects.
Catholic University is partnering with Abdo Development to redevelop
an 8.9-acre across from its campus. Howard University is working
with CastleRock Properties to construct the Howard Town Center
with the purpose of re-activating the Georgia Avenue corridor
near its campus. And George Washington University has joined with
Boston Properties to build the mixed-use Square 54 on the former
site of the George Washington Hospital complex.
