On Wednesday, January 12, renowned BBC journalist and author of
Womenomics: Write Your Own Rules for Success, Katty Kay, spoke
to a sold out crowd at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington
DC. Katty Kay is the Washington Correspondent for BBC World News
America, reporting on American news and politics.
In 2009, Kay co-authored Womenomics: Write Your Own Rules for
Success which examines the changing nature of the workplace and
the manner in which women are remaking the office to suit them.
According to Kay, women just operate “differently”
than men. Businesses see the efficient operational power of women
in their organization positively affect their bottom line –
also known as “pink profits”.
But, women on the rise – beware! “Having it all”
is much different than “doing it all”. Executive level
women found that it’s not always about the money. Women
are ready to sacrifice monetary rewards and titles for more flex
time. Capital One saw this philosophy and responded by changing
their approach to work hours - soon after they noticed productivity
up by 40%. It’s no surprise their male counterparts starting
asking for flex time as well. Katty Kay summed up her speech with
a quote that clearly defines our members’ sentiments: As
Warren Buffet said so astutely, “when you don’t include
women in the discussion, you’re only playing with half the
deck”.
