PROGRAM SUMMARY

March Program:
Golf Can Work for You

CREW DC's March program, Golf Can Work for You, featured Hillary Bruggen, President and Founder of Strelmark LLC, a business development consulting firm.

Hillary's goal was to provide CREW members with the knowledge necessary to empower each individual to leverage golf for business and for life. Below are some of the highlights of Hillary's presentation.

Hillary outlined the benefits of golf in one's career and personal life:

Career

  • Advancement and Access – golf is often the only way to meet and have access to top executives, who do take time for golf
  • Business Bonding – golf is the venue for business bonding, due to the quality time and positive milieu
  • Hierarchy Negation – golf is the great equalizer, a good shot is a good shot, whatever your skill level
  • Presence – golf brings women into a male arena
  • Client Reward – invite and pay for a golf outing for your client
  • Employee Reward – give a golf outing as a reward to an employee who likes to golf
  • Networking - golf builds relationships and makes connections

Personal

  • Bonding – golf allows you to bond with friends and family
  • Meeting – you often meet new people when you play
  • Bonding with boys – spend time with husband and sons
  • Future for girls – college scholarship are available for females who play golf
  • Exercise – buy a light weight “Sunday” golf bag and walk
  • Family Focus – play golf with the family
  • Travel Activity – plan a family vacation around golf

Golf is the sport of choice for many because:

  • Fear of Failure – business golf if player friendly, generally the scramble format
  • Golf is the Game of life – you can learn a lot about an individual's personality when you play golf together
  • Golf is a Mind Game – golf is strategic
  • Golf is an everyman's sport – you don't need to be particularly athletic to participate in golf

Etiquette is extremely important when playing golf:

  • Pace of Play – keep up with the group, even if it means picking up your ball
  • Where to Stand – don't be in the way or cast a shadow
  • What to Eat – healthy with no caffeine or sugar, no alcohol
  • Where to Hit Ball – for most people, try to aim for the center of the green

You can gain likeability on the golf course by:

  • Complementing a good shot or stroke
  • Watching the ball flight, yours and your companions
  • Don't whine about your game
  • Don't talk about your problems

The best way to alienate yourself is to critique someone's game.

It is important for a woman to dress appropriately for Business Golf:

  • Color – good colors are kaki, gray, black or blue
  • Length – if you wear shorts they, should be longer than your hand
  • Style – not tight, buy a size larger than normal to give you freedom to swing
  • Image - conservative

Hillary provided a hand out that summarized the 10 ways to avoid business golf blunders. (Click here to view pdf.)
