Ruth Jansson, Senior Designer for Forrest Perkins, brought together 3 different sides of the art world and commercial real estate (art consultant, building owner and curator) for the November CREW luncheon. Although each panelist had a different perspective on art, they all agreed that art should be considered during the construction phase of the project. Unfortunately, due to budget constraints this is typically not the case and artwork is considered as an afterthought.

The exception to this perspective is the Krieger Museum. Ms. Greenberg commented that the uniqueness of the Krieger is that it was a house designed to function as both a home and a museum. The focus on this home, built by Philip Johnson in the late ‘60's, is not just a living space but a living space for art, architecture, and music. The home was later converted to a full fledged museum and added education opportunities for students, including tours, performances and hands-on activities to area students in order to introduce them to the art world.

The panel continued their discussion on choosing art for office space, homes and the artist themselves. When consulting with clients, Mr. Hemphill stated, “I have strived my entire career to rid myself of taste” in order to mesh with his clients tastes. Mr. Foote suggested the best way to get your client to understand the piece is to “get out of the building's lobby and show them the gallery.” Guidelines for choosing artwork were agreed upon by all panelists; keep the consulting group small and ensure that there is anticipation getting to the piece, along with impact upon arrival to it.
