First, there were rules to follow, the execution of which were dutifully guided by attentive women in corsages.
- Don't sit across from anyone you know
- Shift every four minutes upon sound of the gong
- People facing the front of the room shift in the direction of arrows on the tables
- Hand out your business card
- If you haven't finished the conversation at the sound of the second gong, call them later
The opening gong rang out, and approximately 100 members and guests were off! While a four-minute conversation initially seemed like a good deal of time, it went by fast for most. Dialogue varied from the basic script of who you are, where you work and what you do, to CREW membership involvement, to meeting the needs of specific client requirements and potential future encounters. Of course there was the occasional talk about jewelry, wedding plans and job opportunities.
Upon the end of the session, there was a buzz of satisfaction in the room. The event was organized, efficient and comfortable to likely even the most reticent of participants. Networking is one of the most powerful ways to building professional relationships, actively foster contacts and disseminate information. The true test of success of the CREW program will be each person's follow-up in the weeks and months to come. |
